Increasing Career Opportunities through Foreign Languages: A Certificate in Foreign Language and Area Study.
Weinmann, Sigrid
Michigan Technological University has introduced a program which awards a certificate in Foreign Language and Area Study to students completing two years of the same foreign language and three area studies courses. It was developed in response to the necessity of dropping 19 foreign language courses. A survey of freshman English students revealed that most were unaware of the advanced placement program, and analysis of division requirements found that it was difficult for students to elect a three-term sequence of courses. A survey of corporate employers in Michigan provided support for the opinion that foreign language skills are beneficial in careers, and the placement office provided copies of job descriptions requiring foreign language fluency. Facts about the role of the International Division of the Michigan Department of Commerce were gathered. A university program development committee benefitted from the publicity given to the President's Commission on Foreign Languages and International Studies when it presented its report to the school's administration. The encouraging response from students and faculty led to implementation of some recommendations, including planning of schedules to allow students in all disciplines to take foreign languages. Despite some administrative barriers, the program awarded its first certificates in May 1984, and enrollments are expected to increase. (MSE)
