Phelps, Barbara; And Others
The presentation describes the development of an interdisciplinary team approach to working with mildly retarded students (5-9 years old). The approach featured group discussions and activities to enhance students' listening, communication, and social skills, and to improve individual and group behavior. Individual and group goals were designed by participating staff (a speech/language clinician, school psychologist, school social worker, and special education teacher). Staff roles are described as is the approach's connection with individualized education program goals. Positive results, including an enhanced team concept and flexibility in goal selection are cited along with difficulties in coordinating professionals' schedules. Information on record keeping is provided. Sample goals and activities are appended. (CL)
