The handbook is intended as a guide to help teachers and coordinators in programs for gifted and talented students. Sections present situations and suggestions for action in the following topic areas with sample situations: school administration (refusal of district administration to apply for state aid); coordination responsibilities (request by a student to drop out of the program); individual problems observed in gifted students (parental request for early kindergarten entrance for their child); classes of gifted students (arrogant attitudes toward students not in the class); gifted students in regular classes (use of a self-managing reading group program); parents (parental anxiety); and community (promotion of the idea that gifted education is elitist).
