Exposure to Metal Pollutants and Behavioral Disorders in Children: A Review of the Evidence.
Marlowe, Mike
The paper reviews research on effects of metal pollutants on behavioral disorders in children. Methodological programs of studies conducted in the 1970's are described. Research since 1980 is then addressed in terms of general population studies and studies of behaviorally disordered populations. Findings of research on the latter subject group are examined in criteria for establishing causative relationships: (1) strong associations; (2) consistency of the observed association; (3) dose-response relationships; and (4) biological plausibility. It is concluded that, despite methodological flaws, the studies show an association of behavioral deficits with low or moderate metal levels. A reference list containing 61 entries concludes the report. (CL)
