Therapeutic Ceramic Program for Special Students: Staff Development Manual.
The paper describes ways of incorporating a ceramic program into existing curricula for exceptional children. The program focuses on the process of producing clay products and has as its goals: tension release, heightened self-image, improved coordination, personal growth and emotional maturity. The manual describes organizatonal structure, goals, materials, lesson plans, and evaluation procedures. Implementation guidelines address affective, motoric, and aesthetic goals. Lesson plans specify contents of six 1.5 hour sessions: (1) introduction and pinch pot; (2) coil pot; (3) glaze; (4) slab technique; (5) animal sculpture; and (6) review of glazing. Evaluation suggestions include informal staff and student evaluation. Information on field testing, pottery terms, glazing, kiln management, safety precautions, and additional resources conclude the paper. (CL)
