Creative Behavior Modification Strategies That Work.
Kalishman, Arline
This paper describes a discipline plan at Brentwood (Missouri) Junior High School based on firm and consistent enforcement of rules and regulations that have been developed cooperatively by principal, faculty, and students. The principal holds monthly faculty meetings where all students who are experiencing academic or behavioral difficulties are discussed by the entire group to decide an appropriate course of action. The behavior modification plan includes both negative and positive reinforcements. Negative reinforcers include contracts for students who refuse to behave or perform in class, homework assignment sheets to inform parents of assignments, study hall for students who do not turn in homework, Saturday detention for students who break rules as outlined in the student folder, and class contracts developed between the principal, teacher, and class. Positive reinforcers include the ice cream social, honor roll gallery, "Thank U Gram," Eagle awards, Academic Awards Night, special days, Senior Citizens Day Luncheon, complimentary letters to parents, and faculty telephone calls complimenting students.
