The Educational Experience of Sydney High School Students. Report No. 2: Students', Teachers', and Parents' Perceptions of Schooling.
Meade, Phil
This second report in a study of child migrant education in Australia focuses on the interactions and interrelationships of students, teachers, and parents and attempts to identify each group's perceptions of the functions of schooling and the educational practices through which those functions may be fulfilled. Views on teachers and schooling were solicited from 3,043 high school students from 16 schools (11% of all Grade 9 students attending state schools in Sydney in 1974). Students who stayed at school over a three-year period and as many as possible of the 1,715 students who left school were followed. In 1975, 690 parents of students in the study were interviewed; in 1976, 637 teachers were surveyed via a questionnaire. The theoretical orientations and research methodology of the study are presented in chapter 2. Research findings on students', teachers', and parents' perceptions are given in chapters 3-6. The report highlights the degree to which there is an absence of a shared understanding of the functions of schooling and argues for the importance of shared agreement on curriculum content and schooling procedures in the interest of the education system. Appendices include tables, a methodology of open-ended analysis, and extracts of the interview schedule and guide. (CG)
