Shaping the Future of International Studies. Conference Report of A Wingspread Conference (November 26-28, 1984).
Indiana Univ., Bloomington. Social Studies Development Center.; Global Perspectives in Education, Inc., New York, NY.
This report summarizes some of the findings, issues, and recommendations that participants of a 1984 Wingspread conference felt would shape the future of international studies. Several issues were addressed in plenary sessions, panels, and small group discussions including ways in which the major organizations and agencies concerned with international studies are attempting to serve the schools, kinds of collaborative efforts most needed to improve international studies in schools, and the need for an agenda for action for the upcoming years. Causes for optimism, the need for a more realistic view of the United States' role in the world, and concerns and conditions to address precede three suggested priorities for shaping the future. Background information, current status, and recommendations are provided in separate sections examining international studies at the national, state, and local/regional levels; the improvement of the range and quality of curriculum materials in global education; the improvement of outreach and dissemination of information; contributions that colleges and universities can make; the improvement of research and evaluation efforts; and the inclusion of leadership training at all levels of education. The report concludes with a listing of names and addresses of participants. (LH)
