A Science Curriculum Renewal Cycle.
Bergman, Abby B.
Elementary science instruction in the Tenafly Public Schools became virtually nonexistent in the early 1980's and based on this realization, members of that school system embarked upon a 3-year curriculum renewal cycle. The process followed in the curriculum development plan is somewhat unique and may serve as a model for other school districts to follow. In phase I, a curriculum study group was formed with teacher representatives from all grade levels and areas of administration. Current practices were examined and literataure was reviewed and analyzed for local applicability. At the end of the year, recommendations for pilot projects were made. In phase II, the pilot projects were installed and subjected to an intensive evaluation involving input from students, teachers, administrators, and parents. At the end of the pilot year, recommendations for final implementation were made. Phase III involved the actual implementation of the new curriculum. Another intense evaluation was conducted and final recommendations were made. The viability of the newly-installed curriculum is considered to be 5 years, at which time the renewal cycle is slated to begin once again. The study group will remain intact to deal with problems and to infuse current ideas into the ongoing program. (Author/JN)
