Professional Development for Teachers of Mathematics: A Handbook.
Taylor, Ross, Ed.
The professional development of teachers is seen as a key to improving instruction in mathematics. A position paper on Professional Development Programs for Teachers of Mathematics was endorsed by the Board of Directors of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in April 1985, and this handbook provides suggestions for implementing the recommendations of the position paper. It is designed to help educators face current issues in mathematics education, providing practical ideas for designing and implementing professional development programs. The first section provides an overview, including the role of professional development, research evidence, characteristics of effective programs, and key issues. The second part provides guidelines for effective professional development, activities, focusing on building support and commitment, planning the program, choosing a format, implementing the program, and evaluating the program. Finding resources is the topic of the third part. Appendices contain the position statement, a list of model practices, checklists, and other guidelines. (MNS)
