Providing Human and Material Resources to Remediate and Enrich Math Skills of Second Grade Students.
Beluschak, Elaine Burns
This practicum involved finding a solution to the problem concerning the lack of time classroom teachers had in providing remedial or enrichment mathematics activities for students in grade 2 of a Lee County, Florida elementary school. The target populations was a second grade class that consisted of an average of 23 public school students. Goals of the study were: (1) to provide human and specific material resources to remediate and/or enrich mathematics skills of target students; (2) to have parents of target students become involved with the mathematics remediation/enrichment of their children; and (3) to increase the number of students having a positive attitude toward mathematics. These goals were met by having parents become involved in mathematics "make-and-take" workshop activities, utilizing cross-age tutors, using parent volunteers, and compiling a collection of remedial/enrichment activities for students to use at school and at home. All of the target students received increased remedial/enrichment help in mathematics. All of the target students had parents become involved in some manner with the mathematics remedial/enrichment activities. By the end of the implementation period of the practicum, 100 percent of the students indicated a positive attitude toward mathematics. (Author/JN)
