Five years ago, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) funded an Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) study of the impact of new information and communications technologies on the roles of health sciences libraries in a radically changing health care and educational environment. A key recommendation of the resulting report called for the development of an academic information resources management network with linkages to operational information systems in the academic health sciences center and medical practice loci to facilitate the flow and use of the world's knowledge base in carrying out the functions of education, patient care, and management. GaIN (Georgia Interactive Network for Medical Information) responds to that challenge and speaks directly to many of the final recommendations issued in the report: GaIN is built upon an automated academic health sciences library; it is a gateway to external databases; and it uses database management concepts to organize, package, and deliver information to a multi-level network of users. This document describes the organization and funding of GaIN; key principles incorporated into the network; roles of GaIN members; management and administration of the network; GaIN services; and an evaluation of the program to be conducted in 1986.
