Student Intellectual Development. A Symposium.
Bowling Green State Univ., OH.
Issues concerning student intellectual development during college are considered in a symposium paper and in two reactions by faculty members. The symposium was sponsored by Bowling Green State University as part of the Academic Outcomes Project, which explores the effect of college on student growth and development. The reflective judgment model is the focus of Patricia King's paper, "Developing a Rational Belief System: Intellectual Development in the College Years." The model contends that the reasons a person uses to explain beliefs are related to assumptions about knowledge and reality. These assumptions serve as students' perceptual filters through which they understand what they are learning. The assumptions provide categories the individual uses to perceive and organize information and to make judgments about an issue. The process of forming judgments becomes increasingly complex, as illustrated by seven stages proposed by the model. At the lower stages, authorities serve as sources of absolute truth, while at the higher stages, reality is understood as existing objectively but the process of inquiry is seen as being subjective and fallible. The paper also considers the results of interviews in which students were presented questions about four controversial issues. Reactions to the paper are provided by Thomas Kinney and Sandra Packard.
