Investigation into Differential Entrance Requirements for Tertiary Educational Institutions. Report WS-32. An Abridged Version of Report WS-31.
Stoker, D. J.; And Others
Results of a study of 1980 university entrance requirements in South Africa are presented, with attention to (1) the question of whether the minimum score on the Standard 10 examination should be raised and (2) the possibility of differential entrance requirements and channeling of students to various kinds of tertiary education. Previous research in South Africa, including studies of success at universities and particularly during the freshman year, is also reviewed. The study sample consisted of 16 universities, 9 technikons, 35 teacher training colleges, and 80 nursing colleges. Tertiary institutions in the Republic of South Africa and four independent states were evaluated: Transkei, Bophuthatswana, Venda, and Ciskei. Statistical analysis included: CHAID and XAID computer programs; regression, multivariate, and discriminant analysis; principal component analysis; and correspondence analysis. Scatter diagrams and tables display the findings of each technique. It was found that if the minimum examination score were raised 100 points, 828 of the 6,284 students would not have obtained university entrance, although 19% of those 828 students were in fact successful in their university study. Additional findings are provided, along with explanations of the statistical techniques. A summary in both English and Afrikaans is included. (SW)
