The College Board Guide to Going to College While Working. Strategies for Success.
Hawes, Gene R.
Practical advice and proven strategies for fulfilling college goals while holding down a part- or full-time job are offered to students, with a focus on adult students. Attention is directed to: evaluating talents, interests, and career aims to determine college plans; locating the most suitable college and degree programs; financing the cost of college; organizing the process of applying for admission and financial aid; avoiding the "traumas" of registering for the first time and starting classes; combining the demands of school with those of home and work; building study skills for confidence and good grades; managing time efficiently and effectively; and asserting student rights and using college services. Specific contents cover: potential advantages of getting a degree; careers entered after attaining associate and bachelor's degrees; using special guidance services or books on setting career goals; and recognized colleges requiring little or no classroom attendance. Case histories that give readers insight into how other working adults have reached their college goals are provided, along with checklists, schedules, charts, and record sheets to help plan each step. A glossary of college terms and a brief annotated bibliography are also included. (SW)
