Let Your Students Do the Talking: Pattern Practices in a Partner System.
Senor, Virginia
The Classroom Pairing System (CPS) for second language instruction is a simple pattern practice technique that allows students to practice orally with a partner. An advantage of the technique is that it allows maximum time on task for each student in a large class. Students hold picture cards in their hands, and the partners ask and answer questions or make statements to each other according to the cards. After using the card, the students pass it on to another student pair until all pairs have used all cards. Because the cards are related to the content of the lesson, with this technique the students can practice all the material of the lesson in turn. The process is fast-paced, with many students talking at once, and can be used at any level or with any language, with commercial or teacher- or student-illustrated cards. CPS is not designed to elicit creative student responses, but only to practice patterns learned in class using illustrations to motivate visually-oriented students. Included are a number of examples of pattern practices that can be used in both French and Spanish, in beginning, intermediate, and advanced classes. (MSE)
