Applying Play to Therapy.
Ritter, Patricia S.; Fokes, Joann
The objectives of this paper are (1) to present the relationship of play to language and cognition, (2) to describe the stages of play and discuss recent literature about the characteristics of play, and (3) to describe the use of play with the multifaceted goals of cognition, pragmatics, semantics, syntax, and morphology as an intervention strategy with language disordered children. Applications of play in the meeting of language and cognitive goals are discussed. Actual examples of the incorporation of the play framework within a therapy session are described for the Sensorimotor and Pre-operational stages. The importance of matching play activities with the child's level, interest, and interactional capacity is stressed. Four pages of references are included. (Author/CL)
