Collective Bargaining in Illinois Schools, 1984-85. A Research Report in Four Parts: 1--Current Status; 2--Impact on Decision Making; 3--Salary Comparisons; 4--Teacher Benefits.
Booth, Ronald R.; And Others
In October 1984 the Illinois Association of School Boards mailed four-part questionnaires concerning collective bargaining and salaries to superintendents in 940 of the 1,006 school districts in Illinois. This report arranges the data from the 582 responses into tables providing information concerning four broad subjects: the current status of collective bargaining, the effects of collective bargaining on decision-making, the differences between teacher salaries for the 1984-85 school year and those for the previous year, and the costs of teachers' fringe benefits. The data concerning the status of collective bargaining are broken down to show regional differences and differences between districts that engage in bargaining and those that do not. The second set of tables, focusing on decision-making, breaks down data on the extent of teacher participation in school administration according to geography and the application of collective bargaining agreements. The salary comparison data cover raises, salary levels, and relationships between teacher background salary, and are broken down by bargaining status, geography, and other factors. Variables used in breaking down the teacher benefit cost data include geography, bargaining status, and district size. The questionnaire used is included and highlights of the survey findings are noted. (PGD)
