Mr. Togs the Tailor: A Context for Writing.
Scottish Curriculum Development Service, Edinburgh.
The first of a planned series of papers, this document describes in detail a context for writing created by a teacher and her second grade class. Section one includes the teacher's diary of plans for using an imaginary doll, "Mr. Togs the Tailor" as a context for learning during most of a term and selected children's writing on such topics as Mr. Togs's birthday, Mr. Togs's illness, and Mr. Togs retires to the country. Section two, "Mr. Togs: the Background," describes the school in which this project took place, the teaching area, the classroom teacher and her form of organization, and the planning for basic skills teaching and for the Mr. Togs project. In presenting Mr. Togs as an example of a successful project rather than a model to be mimicked, section three discusses some key points concerning the need for context in learning and in remembering; inhabiting the context; the quantity, quality, and range of writing; curricular integration; the role of drama; the physical reality of Mr. Togs and his shop; the role of the parents; and the importance of discussion. The appendixes include samples of students' writing generated by the project. (EL)
