Family Living Including Sex Education 1984-85. OEA Evaluation Report.

This document describes an evaluation of the Family Living including Sex Education (FL/SE) program of the New York City public schools. The evaluation summary describes the FL/SE as a comprehensive, sequenced curriculum for kindergarten through high school on the topics of human growth and development, family relationships, friendship, reproduction, and decision-making. The summary further states that the targeted curriculum implementation has produced the following: (1) students have gained knowledge in FL/SE topics and confidence in discussing them; (2) staff development sessions were well-attended; (3) parents supported parent workshops; (4) individual districts formed councils addressing their needs (5) all districts wished to expand the program; and (6) more districts plan to implement FL/SE. The document includes a program description which discusses the administration and goals of the program. The evaluation methodology is described. Program implementation is discussed including advisory councils, staff responsibility, strategies, curriculum use, district plans, and problems encountered. Staff training and development and student outcomes are discussed. Recommendations for future program development are made. Tables and figures of evaluation data are included. (ABL)
