This guide, which was written as an initial step in the development of a systemwide articulated curriculum sequence for all vocational programs within the Metropolitan Nashville Public School System, outlines the suggested scope and sequence of a 4-year program in urban horticulture. The guide consists of a course description; general course objectives; course content outlines for each semester of the four years of the program; and lists of recommended textbooks, curriculum guides, and audiovisual materials. Topics addressed in the four years of the program include the following: the Future Farmers of America, plant scientific names and terminology, plant identification, soil quality, soil protection and conservation, leadership training, plant science, plant growth, color in the florist industry, artificial corsages, plant propagation, insecticides, lawn care and turf management, mechanics in horticulture, vegetable gardens, fruit gardens, greenhouse management, flower arrangement, landscaping procedures, small power equipment, floral shop skills, preparation for a horticulture occupation, specialty crops, seedlings, nursery crops, roses, orchids, operation of a garden center, container gardening, provision of flowers for weddings, and spray programs for fruit.
