Campus Child Care within the Public Supported Post-Secondary Educational Institutions in the State of Wisconsin.
Olsen, Glenn W.
The availability of campus child care, day care needs, and parents' preferences for day care were examined at the 42 public supported postsecondary institutions or districts in Wisconsin: the vocational-technical districts, the 4-year universities, and the 2-year university center system campuses. The districts in Wisconsin were surveyed to discover the availability and operation of campus child care. In addition, 206 parents who used campus child care responded to a questionnaire about their child care needs and preferences. Findings revealed a significant difference in child care center sponsorship among the three educational systems. Both the Vocational, Adult, and Technical Educational System and the 4-year University of Wisconsin had a majority of campus child care centers, whereas the 2-year University of Wisconsin Center System had only two campus child care centers. No significant differences among the three educational systems were found in the following six areas: (1) the percentage of students using the campus child care centers relative to the total student body; (2) reasons parents give for using centers; (3) parental need for campus child care in the absence of a campus center; (4) convenience; (5) costs; and (6) quality of staff in the campus centers in comparison with other local child care programs. Three pages of references are included and questionnaires used in the study are appended, as well as lists of the institutions under study. (RH)
