Foreign Language Instruction in Florida Community Colleges.
Feigenbaum, Kim
This paper reports on foreign language instruction in the community colleges of Florida. A brief rationale for increasing the importance given to language instruction is followed by a review of the literature concerning the latest classroom and laboratory foreign language techniques such as computers, video taping and analysis, audio tape improvement, relaxation techniques, and classroom improvement techniques. Next, community college language programs in Florida are discussed, based on coversations with language instructors at Santa Fe Community College, Miami-Dade Community College (MDCC), St. Petersburg Junior College and Florida Junior College. The next section provides a more detailed look at the activities of MDCC's Foreign Language Task Force. Concluding comments stress that: (1) the key to success in teaching foreign languages lies in the classroom; (2) resources should be allocated to faculty development and new hiring; (3) MDCC's Language Task Force is likely to influence and benefit Florida's language programs; and (4) better lines of communication between community colleges and universities should be developed.
