Interdisciplinary programs at nine colleges and universities are described. An introductory essay, "Reflections from an Interdisciplinary Milieu," by Donald N. Levine discusses the benefits of an interdisciplinary emphasis for undergraduate education. The following programs are featured: Bowdoin College's environmental studies program; Brown University's interdisciplinary courses; an interdisciplinary option for technical education students at California State Polytechnic University-Pomona; senior colloquium focusing on social issues at Lafayette College; University College at Memphis State University, which provides interdisciplinary offerings and special programs for students whose educational needs are not met by traditional avenues of study; Ohio Dominican College's liberal studies course which covers ancient and modern readings that pertain to the themes of reason and faith; a 3-year interdisciplinary program at Rhodes College that covers the interlocking nature of food production and consumption; St. Lawrence University's Canadian Studies program, which is both interdisciplinary and cross-cultural; and William Jewell College's interdisciplinary general education program of six courses that emphasizes decision making and values. An annotated bibliography on resources is included. (SW)
