Core Competences in Engineering. An FEU View.
Further Education Unit, London (England).
A framework for the education, training, and accreditation of engineering personnel in England, particularly those at the craft/technician level, is proposed. The competence-based core for engineering education and training is endorsed by the Basic Engineering Study Group, and is the result of a 2-year project to address problems of overlap, duplication, and inadequate linkage between courses. Recommendations for implementation, assessment, and accreditation are included, along with suggestions for coordinating agreement on standards. Engineering core aims and general objectives are presented for: communication skills, engineering drawing, design and decision-making, mathematics, engineering science, engineering systems, engineering materials, laboratory and practical work, tools and equipment, measurement and data evaluation, and industry and the social environment. Appendices include: an outline of the development of "Core Competencies in Engineering," a list of the study group members and their affiliations, examples of tasks suitable for competence-based learning and assessment, position statements by six interested agencies, examples of college organization for "core competencies" learning and assessment, and a glossary of terms and list of abbreviations. A bulletin summarizing the report is included. (SW)
