GPA Prediction Procedures and Normative Data for Freshmen. Indiana Studies in Higher Education Number Fifty-Two.
Jacobs, Lucy Cheser
Procedures for predicting academic achievement at Indiana University, Bloomington, are examined, based on data for the 4,145 freshmen who entered the university in fall 1983. Three sets of prediction equations and a graphic scheme for determining probable first semester grade point averages (GPAs) for males and females are provided. Entering freshman norms are included for Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores, relative high school rank (RHSR), and first and second semester GPAs. The best single predictor of GPA for both males and females is RHSR, but a weighted combination of SAT verbal, SAT math, and RHSR provides the most accurate prediction of GPA. The academic achievement of females is slightly more predictable than that of males. While males have higher SAT scores, females have higher grades at the university. The correlation between these students' first and second semester grades is also provided. An alternative procedure for estimating a student's likely achievement at the university enables the adviser to used graphs and a table to quickly estimate the likelihood of a student's obtaining GPAs in various ranges. Examples using the equations and the graphs are included. (SW)
