A history of the first 20 years of the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) is presented, along with an issue of the SCUP newsletter (v15 n3 1985) summarizing the society's 20th annual conference. SCUP's role and performance is divided into five-year periods beginning with 1961-1965. SCUP was founded in 1966 but initial planning for the society began in 1958. The 1967 draft statement of goals stressed academic, fiscal, and physical planning. At the end of the first 5 years of the society, prospects were good: a growing membership, well-organized, well-programmed annual meetings, a regional program underway, a publications program; and executive director continuity. While great growth in membership and income occurred in the early 1970s, costs of quality and prestige also increased. At the end of 10 years, SCUP's expenditures were running about one year ahead of its income. A financial crisis occurred during 1976-1980, and during 1980-1984, SCUP returned from New York to Ann Arbor and experienced renewal. Appendices include lists of charter members, 1978-1979 publications, and annual meeting locations and themes, as well as data on 1978 and 1983 membership, and a 1985 mission statement and statement of objectives and activities.
