Chile. English Teaching Profile.
British Council, London (England). English Language and Literature Div.
A review of English language usage and instruction in Chile describes the role and status of English in society and outlines the situation of English-as-a-second-language instruction within the educational system at all levels. The profile covers the folLowing areas: the characteristics, qualifications, and pre- and in-service training of English teachers; curriculum and testing; choice and availability of instructional materials; educational administration in relation to English teaching; development and planning of English instruction; instruction outside the educational system; British and other international support for English instruction; commercial opportunities for English language goods and services; the status of creative writing and current research; and further information sources. It is concluded that the demand for English instruction has remained relatively high in Chile, but that recent political and economic trends have limited English language instruction and teacher training; recent language program results have been poor. Anticipated trends include growth in instruction in English for special purposes, continued emphasis on language instruction in English-language and British-type schools, possible lowering of teacher education course entrance standards and decline in trained teachers willing to accept existing pay scales, and continued limited allocation of instructional resources.
