Spain. English Teaching Profile.
British Council, London (England). English Language and Literature Div.
A review of English language usage and instruction in Spain describes the role and status of English in society, and outlines the situation of English-as-a-second-language instruction within the educational system at all levels. The profile covers the following areas: the characteristics, qualifications, and pre- and in-service training of English teachers in the basic and advanced level programs; articulation between levels; enrollments; accreditation; choice and availability of instructional materials; student evaluation; educational administration in relation to English teaching; development and planning of English instruction; instruction outside the educational system; British and other international support for English instruction; commercial opportunities for English language goods and services; the status of creative writing and current research; and further information sources. It is concluded that the main weaknesses of English instruction lie in the absence of adequate authority and policy-making in the ministry of education and a shortage of well-trained teachers, and the main strengths lie in the growth of demand for English instruction and awareness of needs in the field.
