Computerized Fleet Maintenance.
Cataldo, John J.
The computerization of school bus maintenance records by the Niskayuna (New York) Central School District enabled the district's transportation department to engage in management practices resulting in significant savings. The district obtains computer analyses of the work performed on all vehicles, including time spent, parts, labor, costs, numbers of repairs, and numbers and times of visits to maintenance facilities. The system enables the department to address recurrent problems, identify vehicles in need of replacement, analyze vehicle usage patterns that can be altered to extend vehicle life, and monitor fuel consumption effectively. The program has decreased the number of repair visits, increased staff awareness of efforts to economize, improved efficiency, and reduced staffing needs. Samples of the forms used in the program are provided and tables displaying data on the program are appended. (PGD)
