Gifted and Talented Entrepreneurship Training Program.
DeMaria, Richard C.
A project was designed to meet the needs of gifted and talented vocational students and to train students to be entrepreneurs. Objectives were to develop criteria to identify and select gifted and talented vocational students, identify instructional materials and methods to introduce entrepreneurship skills, and to develop or locate an instrument to assess the skills taught. Current literature was reviewed, and four major criteria were identified to evaluate nominated students: vocational grades, entrepreneur characteristics, school year, and family in business. Twenty students were selected. A core text was selected and supplemented by incorporating many of the materials and methods found during the search. In a departure from the typical classroom arrangement for lecture presentations, the classroom was arranged as a business conference. The core text included its own quiz that could be used as an assessment instrument. The pretest and posttest statistical evaluations indicated that the program produced statistically significant achievement gains. Participating students found the program interesting, informative, and enjoyable. Appendixes, amounting to well over one-half of the report, include student nomination and survey forms, scoring criteria and candidate scores, core text (table of contents, overview, goals), topical course outline, pretest/posttest, sample student handouts, and student evaluations.
