Characteristics of Florida Vocational Educators and Their Receptivity to and Attitude toward Educational Change and Innovation.
Carr, Gail Hornsby
A survey of 400 randomly selected Florida vocational educators was conducted to determine their attitudes toward educational change and how flexible they are. The teachers received a three-part form which was intended to measure demographics, innovativeness-flexibility, and attitude toward innovation. Approximately 330 questionnaires were returned. The results of the survey showed that Florida vocational educators are favorable toward innovation and change as well as flexible. Results of this study also support the relationship between receptiveness to change and a favorable attitude toward innovation. An association between demographic characteristics and attitude toward innovation, flexibility, and innovativeness was supported by this research. Teachers who had more credits and who belonged to professional associations were more innovative. The research findings also determined an association between flexibility and change receptivity. Recommendations for further research efforts include a measure of the innovations teachers have implemented in order to show a relationship between the survey results and proof that the teachers are practicing innovators. Eleven tables and a reference list are included. (KC)
