Assessment of Vocational Guidance and Counseling Programs. Final Report.
McHam, Marilyn; McLeod, Pat N.
A statewide assessment of vocational guidance and counseling programs was conducted in Texas. The status, role, and function of vocational guidance and counseling personnel were assessed and a handbook of appropriate professional guidance and counseling information was developed on the basis of the survey data. The vocational administrators indicated that there is a need for improvement in areas of administering vocational guidance services, whereas the vocational counselors generally perceived conditions as being close to what should be with a few significant exceptions in such areas as the lack of adequate clerical support staff and the lack of clear and measurable objectives for vocational guidance in some districts. The two weaknesses mentioned most frequently in the area of occupational investigation were the areas of providing students with observation experiences and establishing and maintaining working relationships with local business and industry to promote beneficial field experiences for students. A significant number of the job placement coordinators felt that more interviews should be conducted with potential dropouts for placement purposes. The great majority of students surveyed had positive feelings about the vocational guidance and counseling services provided. (This report includes summaries of the surveys administered to the six groups of practitioners along with copies of the survey instruments and tabulations of their results.) (MN)
