Clinical Experiences in Teacher Education Prior to Student Teaching at Southeast Missouri State University. Report of the Task Force on Alternatives for Clinical Laboratory Experiences in Teacher Education.

A study was made of the clinical experiences, offered by Southeast Missouri State University, for students preparing to be teachers. The study was conducted to determine if modifications in the current system would make possible reallocation of resources, while at the same time preserving the quality of clinical experiences for the students. The Task Force on Alternatives for Clinical Laboratory Experiences in Teacher Preparation, appointed by the president of the university, met for eight sessions with the goals of: (1) becoming familiar with state teacher certification requirements and approaches; (2) reviewing and analyzing curricular patterns used in both state and out-of-state institutions; (3) gaining insights from current literature and recognized educational leaders; (4) recommending alternatives for clinical education; and (5) suggesting implications for the teacher education program that extend beyond their immediate charge. The findings, recommendations, and implications developed by the Task Force are presented. (CB)
