Community College Honors Program.
A study was conducted to determine whether the strategies and tactics employed in the implementation and continuation of well-established honors programs at selected community colleges followed the five stages that Martorana and Kuhns identified as phases in the life cycle of academic innovation (i.e., exploration, formulation, trial, refinement, and institutionalization). Following informal surveys of chief administrators at 80 community colleges in Florida and other selected states, qualitative research methods were used in in-depth studies of the honors programs at three selected colleges (Daytona Beach Community College in Daytona Beach, Florida; DeKalb Community College, Atlanta, Georgia; and Rockland Community College, Suffern, New York). Study findings, included the following: (1) all three colleges employed strategies and tactics corresponding to the exploration, formulation, refinement, and institutionalization stages theorized by Martorana and Kuhns; (2) insufficient evidence existed to demonstrate that any of the three study sites experienced a trial stage; (3) all strategies and tactics used by the community colleges could easily be categorized within one of the five stages; (4) the developmental stages did not have absolute time-sequence boundaries; and (5) few respondents were able to articulate a comprehensive view of the establishment and continuation of honors programs. The study report includes a description of a model for the establishment and continuation of honors programs structured around the four stages employed by the community colleges involved in the study.
