Student Charges at Public Institutions. Annual Survey, 1985-86.
Ludwig, Meredith; And Others
Data on 1985 costs for tuition, fees, room and board at 397 state colleges and universities are presented. The institutions are members of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) or the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges (NASULGC). Trends in charges are reported for the entire group of schools and for specific institutions. For resident and nonresident students, comparative data for 1984 and 1985 are provided for: average undergraduate charges; average room and board costs; and average charges for graduate students and students in first professional schools of law, medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine. A narrative summary of trends includes the following findings: in-state undergraduate students faced an average of $3,621 in tuition, fee, room and board costs in fall 1985, compared to $5,553 for out-of state undergraduates; tuition and fees for in-state undergraduates increased by 8%, compared to an 11% increase for out-of-state students; Texas recorded the largest student-charge hike (over 40%), while Oklahoma was the only state registering a decrease in student charges; in-state graduate students experienced a 7% increase in tuition and fees, while nonresident students faced a 10% increase.
