Distance education at Riverina-Murray Institute of Higher Education (RMIHE) in Australia is addressed in two papers by David Roberts. The first paper, "Approaches to Learning: An Institutional Study," discusses the results of 1984 questionnaires and diaries completed by RMIHE distance education students. Information was sought on how students approached learning from the study materials. Data are presented on such matters as the time students spent studying, how they timetable their study times, and the kinds of emphasis students place on their various learning activities. It is concluded that at RMIHE there is a mismatch between institutional and student expectations about learning approaches. The second paper, "Teleconferencing at Riverina-Murray Institute: Evaluation of a Pilot Study," considers the institute's first serious attempt to develop two-way communication with external students using teleconferencing. A timetable of events for planning and organizing the teleconferencing procedure is presented, along with information on six procedures for gathering data: observations, lecturer diaries, lecturer interviews, student questionnaires, student interviews, and audiocassette analysis. Data analysis is also discussed, and questionnaire and forms are included. (SW)
