Writing across the Curriculum: Strategies for Social Studies.

Focusing on writing as a way of learning subject matter, this paper describes two writing activities in an eighth grade social studies curriculum. First, the paper describes the use of the writing journal--its purposes, advantages, and format--and classroom activities in which students responded to such works as "Lord of the Flies" and "Animal Farm." Next, the paper discusses the collaboration between social studies and English classes, in which students read "David Copperfield," studied the age of industrialization (in Great Britain and the United States), and--through discussion and writing--learned about the relevant political and social issues. Appendixes contain guidelines, objectives, and student writing samples. (EL)
