An overview of a demonstration program in reading designed to improve students' reading skills and their attitudes toward reading at the middle school level is described in this booklet. Following introductory information about the program, the booklet lists some highlights of the program, including testing methods, student contracts, the point system, conferences, parent involvement, and ways of motivating students. Sample materials for recordkeeping and for administering the program are included in this section. The next section, "Reading and Writing Go Hand-in-Hand," discusses the use of daily journals, a "newspaper" written by reading center students, pen pal letters, and creative writing, and includes bulletin board ideas and illustrations. The following section describes evaluation philosophies and methods, and contains an individual grade report form, the current district report card, the student improvement record form, a reading attitude scale, and a diagnostic profile. Lists of suggested tests for assessment, suggested instructional materials, and publishers' addresses are also included. (EL)
