A Rationale for Use of "Grendel" in the High School.
Burress, Lee
In providing a rationale for the use of "Grendel" in high school English classes, this paper presents explanatory material demonstrating its appropriateness, beginning with a discussion of "Grendel" as part of a course in major or contemporary works of literature. The second section of the paper illustrates the use of the novel in connection with study of the Anglo-Saxon epic "Beowulf." Objections to the novel are considered in the third section of the paper, while the fourth section contains reviews of the novel. Biographical information concerning the author, John Gardner, is provided in the fifth section of the paper, and the sixth section discusses the rights of parents concerning the school's curriculum. Finally, the seventh section of the paper is a bibliography for additional reading. (DF)
