The Forgotten Factor in School Success--The Family. A Policymaker's Guide.
This guide, addressed to policymakers, describes specific programs to support the educational role of the family. Based on demonstrated research, it lays out low-cost methods to enhance the impact of schooling by involving the family. Following an executive summary, the volume presents six main sections, with recommendations for addressing the following questions: (1) Why is family involvement important?; (2) What do people want from schools?; (3) What new directions should government take?; (4) What can be done?; (5) How can policy be put into practice?; and (6) What family demographics affect schools? A final section lists additional resources, and an appendix presents sample home learning activities. (KH)
