Going Public: A Public Relations Guide for the Public Schools.
New York Alliance for the Public Schools, New York, NY.
Based on the idea that an aggressive public relations effort is critically important in heightening a community's confidence in its schools, this guide provides advice for developing a school publicity program. The information presented is intended particularly for public schools in the New York City area. First, the guide suggests ways of organizing, writing, and distributing a school fact sheet, brochure, and newsletter. Next, general information is presented on citywide media and their interests in reporting local school news. Tips for working with community newspapers and writing and distributing creative news releases and photographs are provided. Also outlined is how to create a community school calendar for public release, what to consider when writing a letter to an editor on a school-related issue, how to respond when the media contacts the school, and how to deal with the press in general. Then, a number of possible community relations and fund raising activities are listed. The guide concludes with a description of the New York Alliance for Public Schools, a collaboration between community leaders and education professionals. (KH)
