HOSTS Pilot Project: An Evaluation Report of HOSTS Tutoring Proceedures for Students at Cleveland High School During the 1984-85 School Year.

The pilot Helping One Student to Succeed (HOSTS) project has been highly successful in terms of benefits to and attitude impact on students. The 1984-85 project was a continuation of the Retired Teacher Tutoring Project which began in the spring of 1983, combined with HOSTS tutoring methods and materials. Although tutoring by the retired teacher tutors each year was very effective, the addition of HOSTS proved to be a means by which most of the identified student needs were satisfied. Test score gains were exceptionally high as compared with gains obtained by comparison groups such as Chapter I and the total District. Also, the 1984-85 gains are better than the gains of tutoring during the previous year. Improvement over the tutoring project gains of the previous year is especially noteworthy since the gains registrered at that time were above average and well above the usual gains for students with low reading skills. The substantial increases in reading test scores add support to the view that the HOSTS' procedures, as implemented by the Cleveland High School teachers and tutors, are highly effective. (PN)
