The Group as Support in a Native Teacher Education Program.

This study examines a specific Indian/Metis teacher education program which uses the group as a support system--the Saskatchewan Urban Native Teacher Education Program (SUNTEP) at Regina. SUNTEP is a part of the Elementary Teacher Education Program of the Univesity of Regina. This paper: (1) discusses the support services and systems provided as a part of Native teacher education programs; (2) surveys the importance and role of the group and stages of development, as indicated by a review of the pertinent literature; (3) describes the SUNTEP (Regina) program and events contributing to group development; (4) analyzes these events in terms of stages of group development and group health and effectiveness; (5) provides conclusions and implications regarding the SUNTEP (Regina) development of the group as support system; and (6) proposes a model for future group development at SUNTEP (Regina). A description of the University of Regina Elementary Teacher Education Program, on which SUNTEP (Regina) is modeled, is appended. (PN)
