A Tool for Assessing and Designing a K-12 Physical Education Program.

This document provides school district personnel with a self-assessment tool that can be used as a guide or resource when undertaking the development, revision, or evaluation of the physical education curriculum. The tool includes suggestions and sample program content. Because physical fitness is the unique contribution of physical education to the educational program in the schools, it is represented and promoted in two ways: (1) integrated into program content; and (2) as special units such as physical fitness testing, aerobics, or weight training, thus providing in-depth experiences in fitness development, maintenance and knowledge acquisition. Sections of the document include: (1) introductory materials; (2) philosophical considerations; (3) legal authority for physical education; (4) program assessment; (5) student performance expectations; and (6) scope, sequence and time allotment. Sample forms are appended as well as physical education expectations for each grade level. (JD)
