How Fares the Ninth Grade? A Day in the Life of a 9th Grader.

A total of 141 ninth grade students were observed all day in their classes to assess the typical school day of the average ninth grade student. The students were from junior high schools, high schools, and junior-senior high schools. Student behavior was observed and recorded at five minute intervals, and students were interviewed at the end of the school day. Results were analyzed and presented in this volume, which includes chapters on: (1) "The Ninth Grade Study: Why and How"; (2) "The Ninth Grader: A Profile"; (3) "What Are Ninth Graders Experiencing in School?" (4) "Does Organizational Pattern Affect Program"; (5) "Six Samples of Reality"; and (6) Conclusions and Recommendations. Appendices present information on the shadow study technique, observers, analysts, and schools in which the observations took place. (CB)
