This unit is one of a group of units written to fit the Certificate of Sixth Year Studies (CSYS) chemistry course, but it could be used in most Sixth Form courses. The format for this unit is a decision-making or role playing situation. It includes: (1) background information for the teacher, with descriptions of the three roles for individuals or small groups (the roles are those of an industrialist and two consultants), suggested guidelines for two class sessions, and expected answers for student decision sheets; (2) a consultant's packet with references on the chemical urea (instructions, background papers, data sheets, and summary sheets); (3) a consultant's packet with references on ammonium nitrate; and (4) a packet with references related to industry. This situation provides for an industrialist to seek advice on whether to convert the present ammonia for which he already has a plant into ammonium nitrate or into urea. The interaction of students, based on their knowledge of chemistry and other disciplines, should aid in understanding that decisions in the chemical industry are multidisciplinary. (DH)
