Energy & Motion. Science Syllabus for Middle and Junior High Schools. Block G.

Listed in this science syllabus are concepts and understandings in eight major areas: (1) forces, motion, and work; (2) introduction to energy; (3) mechanical energy and machines; (4) sound energy; (5) electromagnetic energy and light energy; (6) heat energy; (7) electric and magnetic energy; and (8) nuclear energy. The booklet also includes questions for students to answer and, when applicable, a code to an activity presented in an appendix. Program objectives and performance criteria are provided for each of the areas, as is a list of 23 science processes keyed to the activities. Three appendices are included. Appendix A contains the activities (cross-referenced in the concept/understanding outline). Each activity includes a purpose, materials list, procedures, and discussion of results. Although some teacher demonstrations are presented, most involve simple equipment and procedures which students can use and complete within half an hour. All activities are designed to assist students in attaining the program objectives. Appendix B is a resource table of units and formulas. Appendix C contains reference stories on energy and motion, noise level listings for common sounds, and a discussion of how color affects human moods and health. (DH)
