American Camping Association. Annual Report, 1985.
American Camping Association, Martinsville, IN.
The 1985 American Camping Association (ACA) annual report reviews trends and successes of the year. The document is in the format of a calendar covering the period October 1985 through September 1986. Calendar pages, on which relevant camping events are noted, alternate with pages of text. An introductory message from ACA President Jean McMullan highlights goals for the coming year: (1) developing and testing nationwide camping standards; (2) embarking on a capital campaign of upwards of a million dollars; (3) broadening and increasing the number of accredited ACA members; and (4) strengthening the ACA Endowment Program. A review of the year's achievements focuses on camping standards (over 1,000 camps prepared for the 1985 visits for camp accreditation and/or site approval), the growth and improvement of Camping Magazine, and membership recruitment. A summary of government relations activities outlines the attention given to child nutrition legislation, exemption of summer student employees from unemployment compensation taxes, and cooperation with federal agencies concerned with public land use. A review of ACA publications mentions eight new books published during the year and cites a 37% growth in sales. Other activities noted include awards of the association, educational services, public relations, research, and field service. Financial data are provided and include comparisons between ACA fiscal years 1984 and 1985. Contributors, life members, Acorn Society members, and national board, committee, and staff members are listed. (JHZ)
