A Staff Development Program to Increase Teacher Competency in Mathematics Education for the Early Years.
Halperin, Dora
This practicum addressed the problem of inadequate teacher preparation in the area of learning theory, content, and methodology related to mathematical instruction of children attending a private child care center in Oakland, California. The general goal of the study was to plan, implement, and evaluate a staff development program to increase teacher competency, while increasing interest and enthusiasm in teaching early childhood mathematics and promoting planned and systematic implementation of mathematical experiences for children. Basic information about early concepts and the developmental facts about the child's acquisition of each specific concept were provided in a teacher handbook titled, "Young Children's Mathematics - A Handbook for Teachers in Child Care Centers and Preschools." The handbook also offered examples of formal and informal opportunities to foster concept formation. Also, to assist teachers in the preparation of planned mathematical experiences, an activity file was prepared. Requiring extensive and active staff participation, these materials were employed during the 12 weeks of program implementation. Evaluation data indicated that participants increased their knowledge of mathematical content and their ability to plan and present mathematical activities to young children. Furthermore, participants succeeded in involving parents in the mathematical learning experiences of their children. Related materials are appended, including evaluation instruments, the handbook, and the activity file. (RH)
